Training required with new California best interest regulations

Effective January 1, 2025, agents are required to complete new training prior to selling specified life insurance in California.

Effective January 1, 2025, agents are required to complete new training to sell specified life insurance in California in compliance with state Senate Bill 263. There are two trainings — a non-term life insurance and a variable life insurance program — that must be completed prior to the solicitation of business for the specified products. Agents can complete the required training on RegEd.com.


New training requirements

  • A 4-hour training is required before selling non-term life insurance products (universal life and whole life), for all licenses issued or renewed on or after 1/1/2024.
  • A 2-hour training is required before selling variable life insurance products (variable universal), for all licenses issued or renewed on or after 1/1/2025.
  • Agents licensed prior to 1/1/2025, must complete the training requirements by 7/1/2025 (six months).
  • There is no training required for term products.
  • All training must be completed prior to solicitation of business.
